It Is Finished

✝️ Scripture

"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."

✝️ Devotional

In life, we often feel like we are constantly owing something—owing people our time, owing our families success, or feeling like we owe God a "better version" of ourselves. We carry a heavy mental debt, always trying to make up for where we fall short.

But when Jesus hung on that cross, His final words weren't a cry of defeat. He said, "It is finished." In the original language, that's a legal term (Tetelestai) that literally means "Paid in Full.". It was a word used to stamp a bill once the last cent was paid. It means the transaction is over. The debt is gone.

The benefit for us today is total freedom. Jesus took the weight of every mistake, every regret, and every "not-enough" moment and settled the account Himself. Good Friday is "good" because the work is done. You don't have to spend your life trying to earn your way into grace or paying back a debt that has already been cleared. You are free to live, free to breathe, and free to start over, knowing that the price for your soul was paid in full.

✝️ Reflection Questions

1

What mistake or "failure" from your past are you still trying to pay for, even though Jesus said it’s finished?

2

How does your work day change when you realize you don't have to prove your worth to God—that He already settled the account?

3

If you truly believed the "work is finished," what one thing would you stop stressing about today?

✝️ Prayer

Jesus, thank You for Good Friday. Thank You for staying on that cross until the debt was paid in full. When I feel the weight of my own failures or the pressure to be perfect, remind me of Your words: "It is finished." Help me to live today in the freedom and the peace that Your sacrifice bought for me. Amen.
